For her first exhibition in Seoul, DOAM draws its inspiration from traditional Korean music, captivated by the percussion and dazzled by the costumes.
« I had worked on the theme of jazz music in France; it was a theme that imposed itself on me upon arriving in Seoul. I wanted to show and share with the Korean public the works largely inspired by Korea for several years and the emotion aroused by the Samulnori.
I chose to paint the Samulnori because they represent Korean popular tradition. Samulnori comes from Nong-ak, the music of farmers; it is a folk music composed of acrobats, folk dances, and rituals inspired by shamanic and Buddhist traditions. Each percussion instrument represents a climatic element : Jing for the wind, Janggu for the rain, Buk for the clouds, and Kwaengwari for thunder, together creating the balance between heaven and earth. I also painted the masks and totems. »
